The Philips Blue Control is a wearable blue light device for the treatment of mild psoriasis. On World Psoriasis Day 2017, Philips launched a new version of the Blue Control – the BlueControl Advance – which reduces the treatment time from 30 minutes to 15 minutes per plaque.

The BlueControl devices contain light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that emit blue light. This type of blue light is thought to help regulate the production of certain skin cells and help to control inflammation, meaning that it may lead to an improvement in symptoms for some people with psoriasis.

As the popularity of the Philips BlueControl increases, the Psoriasis Association is asked about the technology by members and followers more and more often. The clinical data looks promising, and it’s great to see a treatment option for mild psoriasis that is convenient and mess-free. However, it is important to remember that, as with all treatment options for psoriasis, what works for one person will not necessarily work for another. We’re also naturally fairly cautious about treatments or products that claim not to have side effects. Whilst it’s true that blue light does not work in the same way as established UV therapy treatments and therefore is unlikely to have the same side effects, to our knowledge the long term (i.e. over a number of years) effects of blue light treatment are not yet known.

Because every person with psoriasis is different, it is important to have as wide a range of treatment options available as possible. We would always recommend maintaining regular contact with your GP or Dermatologist, but if you’re looking for an option to help you manage mild psoriasis at home, then these devices may appeal to you.

The Philips BlueControl and BlueControl Advance devices are not currently available on the NHS, but can be purchased online through the manufacturer.
