2002 Grants
Six
grants agreed totalling £145,420
We
are delighted to report that the National Council recently agreed to fund
six projects recommended by the Medical & Research Committee. This
is the highest number of grants awarded in any one year for some time
and the total amount awarded is £145,420.
The Association is pleased to support such a breadth of research across
a range of research centres, that will contribute to our understanding
and treatment of psoriasis.
A
brief summary of the 2002 projects:
* Dr Laura Berroeta
at Ninewells Hospital Dundee - a grant of £4100.
Time course study of the development of PUVA erythema following the oral
administration
of 5 methoxypsoralen 5(MOP).

Dr Catherine Smith at St Johns Insititute
of Dermatology, London- a grant
of £36,092. Apolipoprotein E polymorphisms, chronic plaque
psorioasis and disease response to acitretin.

Professor Nick Reynolds at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne
- a grant over two years totalling £52, 835 Analysis of
intracellular calcium signalling response in psoriasis.

Dr Robin Plevin at the University of Strathclyde - a grant over
two years
totalling £59335 The role of nuclear factor kappa B and
SP-1 in psoriasis.
* Dr Sandy McBride at the Royal Free Hospital London - a grant of £2588. To determine the effect of venous compression on clearance of lower leg psoriasis during phototherapy

Dr Jonathan Hales at the University of Leicester - a grant of £37284.
Psoriasis, streptococcus pyogenes and stress
2001
Grants
In 2001 the
Association awarded three grants and we await with interest the results
of those projects.
Dr
Jonathan Hales at the University of Leicester received £11500
to start his work on Psoriasis, pyogenes and stress and we are pleased
that we are able to support continuing work on this project in 2002.
Professor
Jonathan Rees at the University of Edinburgh - a grant of £7491
for a Pilot for the Edinburgh Longitudinal Psoriasis Study.
Dr Helen Richards at the University of Manchester - a two year grant totalling £37313 to study the Influence of brief cognitive -behavioural intervention on the rates of skin clearing in psoriasis patients undergoing photochemotherapy.
