Biologics and Social Distancing/Masks

Chronic Plaque Psoriasis since I was 18. Tried UVB & PUVA. Taken Ciclosporin, Methotrexate, Acetretin, Apremilast, now on Tremfya.

Hi everyone 👋🏼 I’ve been taking various immuno suppressants for the past 20 years, but only started on Biologics in March this year (2021). I’m interested to see what everyone else is doing regarding mask wearing and socialising. I always wear a mask to the supermarket and rare visits to other types of shops and as I’m able to work from home I don’t really go anywhere else (sad I know 😆). But over the coming weeks I’ve been invited to quite a few social events such as birthday meals, 50th birthday parties. How has everyone else been handling these types of situations? Do you go but wear a mask? Just not go at all? Or are you really comfortable and go without a mask and let your hair down? I’m on Tremfya (Guselkemab) btw and so far having a very good experience. Many thanks Julia

A P sufferer for over 30 years, through good and bad times.

Hi Julia, my experience for what it's worth, everyone will react differently and you should make your own mind up about social distancing and not let people put undue influence on you to attend parties and functions etc. Anyway similar to yourself I have been on an immunosuppresent during Covid, I was never asked to shield by the doctor. I was ultra careful and wary about going out in public crowds, even now I will wear a mask in shops or in a cafe until I sit down and drink. I have attended a number of family gatherings since August and I have tried to stay outside where possible like at house functions. Where inside I have stuck with my immediate family and not tried to mingle too much. On an occasion I have declined a family gathering for the reason that it would be too much mingling and being close to people inside. People have understood my reasons I have attended sports stadiums where the vast majority don't wear a mask, but I still have. Of course there is a risk by just being near people but if you do mental risk assessments and be careful then you can get on with your life in a relatively safe and responsible way. I hope you find a good balance.
