Hi. I am trying to find out if people end up using Protopic successfully long term as maintenance for facial psoriasis. Currently steroid treatment has resulted in the worsening of lesions and after 3 days stopping the treatment it comes back with a vengeance. The suggestion to move to Protopic is worrying as the same may happen again, and I cannot see a time when Protopic could only be used twice a week to keep it away. Or is Protopic good at keeping it away for longer? What are people’s experiences? Is this just another sticking plaster that can’t be maintained? I am also aware of all the concerns about long term usage and black box warnings. Another worry as well as the forums reporting withdrawal side effects despite it not being a steroid. Thanks for any feedback on the use of Protopic for the face.

I have had no replies. Is protopic rarely used for facial psoriasis? I have had two dermatologists recommend that we have to try it. Any experience of this product for psoriasis recently? And it’s successful use for long term management.

I started using it recently for facial Psoriasis with good results so far.
Once completely cleared I will try a maintenance schedule of application twice a week.
I don think there are any implications of long term use, but it is known to cause liver issues when taken as a tablet so I don't intend to use it forever.

Hi, I've used it on my face before and I still use it on other parts of my body to keep. The dermatologist recommended this for my face as non-steroid and won't think my skin. I used it twice a week for a while then reduced to once weekly and then every other week before stopping and luckily, it hasn't re-appeared for a while but normally, once a year it will return and I get it back under control.
Of course, your Dermatologist may have different regimes for you but that's what I followed.
I had no withdrawal symptoms or rebounds either
I have always been told to avoid the sun when using Protopic so I also use SPF too. if I'm using this, only because I'm really cautious and I don't know how much sunlight is dangerous with Protopic.

Also using protopic on the back of my ears 2wice a week. I rather have the black boxes with that, than going to ciclosporine or mtx, biológics etc. In my opinion protopic is better on keeping at bay than steroids, when using steroids I agree it comes back with vengenance. I would love to hear other peoples stories with this.
