New Lay Summary - Personalising Biologic Therapy in Psoriasis

Biologic drugs are injection medications that target specific parts of the immune system to help clear psoriasis. Many people stay on these medications long term, even when their psoriasis is well controlled.

Currently, everyone receives the same dose of biologic medication, even though each person’s body may process the drug differently, meaning some may receive too much, or not enough, drug to control their psoriasis.

Research shows that once a certain concentration of drug is reached in the blood, higher concentrations don’t necessarily lead to better outcomes.

Taking more medication than is needed may lead to unnecessary injections and visits to the hospital.

To help address this, we developed and validated an online dashboard that uses a mathematical model to calculate the precise dose of biologic medication that works best for each individual.

The dashboard calculates the dose using the concentration of drug in an individual’s blood (measured using a simple blood test) and other personal factors (e.g. body weight).

The user-friendly 'precision dosing dashboard' can personalise biologic treatment by finding the right dose for each patient — reducing unnecessary medication use while keeping psoriasis well controlled.

The dashboard is being used in a trial of personalised dosing strategies in psoriasis that is running at multiple dermatology centres in the UK.
