Hey, I am on my second major flare up of p and having tried UVA/B and a wide range or creams, I am being put on methotrexate. Is there anyone on here who has tried it and can give me a more personal account as all the websites are very prescribed! Side effects look terrible! Thanks x

48 years

hello sarah, its my first time on here, i was on methotrexate years ago , when you had to have a liver biopsy every 18 months, all i can advise is be careful and listen to the experts, my dematologist put me back on it last year , and was ill due to being allergic to it, since then not only do i have psoriasis i often break out in hives, but my aunt as used it for ages with no side effects, im sure you will be kept a close eye on ,good luck and i hope it works for you.

For as long as I can remember. Utterly fed up.

I am on it, have been for about 2 months. It acts very slowly and I have to say IF I had any of the side effects I probably wouldn't bother as you have to be very patient with it before it starts working....I have not had a single side effect at all on it! Don't worry about it as it is a very closely monitored drug, and frankly my attitude was I'd put up with any amount of nausea to be psoriasis free, but as I say, I have been pleasantly surprised!

21 years of psoriasis most treatments not effective currently on methotrexate injection at last very good control, hospitalized three times

hi Sarah I have been on Methotrexate injection for 3 years and for me i was a wonder drug, be assured you will be closely monitored worst side effect was the sickness and nausea this was controlled with odansatron remember to take your Methotrexate on the same day and at the same time each week it works better this way. all the best

I have had psoriasis for 34 years and feel I have tried every cream and treatment available. I am now on Stelara injections and it's early d

Hi Sarah, i was taking Methotrexate for two years three years ago; i was delighted with the results until i started to build up some resistance and it became less effective. I was monitored very closely (as i'm sure you will be) with blood tests regularly. It is recommended you avoid alcohol to avoid putting more strain on your liver and i would recommend you stick to that as strictly as you can. I had absolutely no side effects and was very pleased to have been given this treatment as it meant I gained a great deal of self confidence and was able to take up swimming again, something i hadn't done since i was a child. I hope it works as well for you and, as other comments state, regular blood tests will mean that you will not be in danger of any unchecked health problems. Good luck.

Hi. First post too. I was on it for a year or two a couple of years ago. It worked really well, then I reached saturation point, where I was on the max dose allowed, at which point my ps was creeping back. Around the same time I noticed some strong side effects; mostly depression and nausea. Taking folic acid helped, but in the end I just had to give up as my ps was coming back quickly. I was swapped to acitretin, which never really worked and after a year off meds I started on ciclosporin today. Yet to see if this will help. But, for me, methotrexate worked really well. Until it didn't. I wouldn't mind taking again, but know that it's probably only going to work for a mid term period.

Has psoriasis for 18 years now and it flared up when I was 7 years old. Had the majority of treatments available, some of which have helped

I have been on methotrexate for 4 years before and I was completely clear. Obviously it's not the best for you so I came off it and my psoriasis came back. I have been on a few courses of light since and again I cleared but it returns within a few weeks after stopping treatment. I tried ciclosporin which was great but once you are off this my psoriasis came back 10 times worse than what it was before I started! I am now going back on a treatment of light.... can anyone else recommend anything else? x

Plaque psoriasis for 21 years, psoriatic arthritis, and now guttate psoriasis.

Hi i have psoriatic arthritis and have been on Methotrexate for a year now. The plaque psoriasis went more or less within two weeks, I haven't had any real problems with Methotrexate, went quite light headed the first week, so they upped the folic acid. Unfortunately i have now come out in guttate psoriasis which is worse than the plaque psoriasis. Cant win!! Methotrexate varies from person to person, so dont worry. X

I was first diagnosed 9 years ago aged 25 with psoriasis and then diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis at 28. It started with a small patch o

Hi I've been on methotrexate and folic acid for 6 years, I started on 20mg (2.5mg tablets) but found after a few years my flare ups were becoming more regular, I was advised that my body was no longer absorbing enought of the drug, I was then prescribed the injection form of methotrexate I have been injecting this weekly but have had to change my dosage a few times as my liver function levels went haywire, I also have psoriatic arthritis so have now been prescribed goilmumab (Simponi) to go along side the methotrexate.

Psoriasis various places on and off for years and psoriatic arthritis

Hi all, After trying all the lotions and potions uv lights etc I first went on mtx in 2004 after a massive outbreak after giving birth I started on a low dose then ended on 25mg It was wonderful I was completely cured for as long as I stayed on it! no side effects apart from a sore throat every other month! but this was nothing compared to the psoriasis! Came off the following year to have another baby it came back a bit in pregnancy but then again massive out break after delivering and developed psoriatic arthritis straight back on the mtx it was again wonderful and the arthritis went too! then off again for the 3rd baby and of course massive outbreak and really painful arthritis in my wrist mtx took longer to kick in this time but in the end clear again! I think its truly wonderful I am off it again now and have now been off for 6 months so we are trying for another baby It has of course come back I use elocon cream on my face a few days on and off and on my legs and arms I also use double base and dipro base creams and tgel shampoo. I don't drink alcohol at all and this really helps. Reading other posts about being cured very interesting! I too have a sluggish bowl there could be something in it! Don't worry we have to try all these things and I really hope this works for you.

I have had psoriasis for a number of years and had various courses of UVB and varios topical treatments. The UVB worked during the course and for a few months afterwards but the psoriasis gratually flared up again. The dermatoligist recommend metotrexate but I turned it down because a friend had problems with it. In May this year i was diagnosed with another complaint which methotrexatae and steriods are the treatment. I am on 15mg of methotrexate a week and have bloodtests every month to ceheck liver, kidney and other blood things. It has resulted in at the time of this post an almost complete clear up of my psoriasis, which was on almost 75% of my body, and made me wish i had taken the advice of the dermotoligist years ago.

Plaque Psoriasis since childhood, now nail psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, eye problems, the full monty really!

Isn't it infuriating how quickly this disease seems to become impervious to something that seems to be clearing it? It seems to be a feature that once your body realises you're getting on top of the situation it sends out more T-cells to attack the healing process. I have a good 30 years of life left hopefully, if research doesn't get ahead on this, I can see me running out of options before I get old!

I can barly sleep at all. My scalp is constantly itching even 5 minutes after a tar shampoo. And my whole body feels like something is crawi

I was on Methotrexate and drank alot. I almost dies. couldn't walk. I was crawling and vomited blood 12 times in three day . When i went to the toilet, it was digested black blood thick like pudding. I called the ambulance. The hospital said one more day I would have died. I was there for 8 days, but they wanted me there for 2 weeks. I'm very scared of that drug. I went to another dermatologist and she said he never should have given me that. It is also used for woman who have no more periods.

Bad

Methotrexate is a chemo drug. My late wife was on it for a short while and made her quite ill and with obvious hair failure. Be careful with this medication.

I have had psoriasis for 24 years

Methotrexate made me very miserable. Almost like the whole world was grey! I came off it and got some uvb to cheer myself back up, and now I'm trying fumaric acid esters. Been on them for a few months and there is no real change yet... Nothing like methotrexate. However if they do work eventually, i'd take their side effect of stomach cramps over the misery of methotrexate any day!

Since I was 19, mid 60's now. I used Tinefcon to good effect though they went broke. I have tried Mare's Milk with some effect I think I may

Hello, my skin is so sore at the moment I am thinking of taking this drug. I saw a Consultant in March and he gave me a script, in the UK you have to see a Consultant first and then the GP will prescribe. Do I have to do anything before I start. I think the script was 2.5mg, one tablet a week! I was taking herbal medicine Tinefcon but they went bust. I bought Mares Milk in a tablet form, it works but will not clear the skin completely. So the decision to try M.........John
