Hi there, Just wondered how many others with psoriasis have had acid reflux or suffered with other digestive issues, whether chronic or otherwise. Thanks.

Can you give us an idea of what your diet is? I get it but never classed it as being psoriasis based.

Thanks for the reply. I’ve seen a few studies online linking psoriasis to acid reflux and gastro issues in general. I’ve suffered with it for a long time, but noticed that when my psoriasis improved for a short period, so did my reflux. I just wondered how many others on the forum had similar experiences.

Psoriasis and digestive issues like acid reflux can sometimes be connected through various mechanisms, although they are distinct conditions. Here are some considerations: 1. **Immune System and Inflammation**: Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells, leading to inflammation and the characteristic skin plaques. Similarly, digestive issues like acid reflux can involve inflammation of the esophagus or stomach lining. 2. **Shared Risk Factors**: Some risk factors, such as obesity, smoking, and stress, are linked to both psoriasis and acid reflux. These factors can exacerbate inflammation in both conditions. 3. **Medications**: Certain medications used to treat psoriasis, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), can irritate the stomach lining and contribute to acid reflux symptoms. 4. **Diet and Lifestyle**: Dietary habits and lifestyle choices can affect both conditions. For instance, spicy foods, alcohol, and caffeine may trigger acid reflux symptoms, while a poor diet can influence inflammation levels in psoriasis. 5. **Treatment Challenges**: Managing both psoriasis and acid reflux may require careful coordination between dermatologists and gastroenterologists. Some treatments for one condition may exacerbate the other, so it's crucial to communicate all symptoms and medications to your healthcare providers. If you're experiencing both psoriasis and digestive issues like acid reflux, it's essential to consult with healthcare professionals who can provide personalized advice and treatment options tailored to your specific needs.

Yes, I have both. I've had plaque psoriasis for 15 years and starting getting IBS symptoms around the same time. This followed a bout of shingles, which I think triggered my psoriasis initially. Shortly after this, I started getting frequent episodes of acid reflux and have been taking omeprazole daily ever since.

I have had psoriasis for nearly 50 years and for the first time, last year, had some digestion issues. Saw my GP who said could be silent reflux. As it was nearly Christmas I decided to just take a few doses of Gaviscon advanced after each meal. Worked for a couple of weeks. Saw GP again who suggested taking a stool sample. Diagnosed with H.pylori bacterial infection. One week course of antibiotics and PPI. I googled this H.pylori and psoriasis and as a sufferer am significantly more likely to experience. So what I have noticed since the course of drugs is that my psoriasis, for the first time in a long time, has actually decreased to an acceptable level (for me). Over the last few years when I have had flare ups is probably when I have had gut issues

Should also mention that two weeks ago had abdominal ultrasound and upper gastroscope. Diagnosed with mild gastritis.
