Tips for managing psoriasis in hot weather
Our top tips for managing psoriasis this summer.
Many people find their psoriasis improves during the summer months, this is likely due to an increase in sunlight which can be beneficial for psoriasis, and the absence of cold, drying weather.
Whilst sunlight can be helpful for psoriasis, it is important to take steps to protect your skin in order to prevent potential side effects such as skin cancer or premature aging. Additionally sunburn may make psoriasis worse, so following sun safety advice is key. Here are our tips for looking after you psoriasis this summer.
- The British Association of Dermatologists recommends wearing a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 and ensuring it has a high UVA protection of 4 or 5 stars, making sure you apply generously when out in the sun,
- Protect the skin with clothing, including a hat, t-shirt and sunglasses,
- Spend time in the shade between 11am-3pm when the sun is at its hottest,
- Keep a regular moisturising routine and ensure you apply plenty to keep skin hydrated after being in the sun,
- Swimming in salt water can help to reduce flakes and improve the appearance of psoriasis, so a dip in the sea can be helpful. Remember to rinse off and moisturise afterwards as salt water and chlorinated water can be drying.
- Wear light clothing and dress in breathable fabrics such as cotton, this can help to reduce sweating and ensure you keep cool,
- For the skin to stay hydrated the body has to stay hydrated too, so be sure to drink plenty of water,
- Some treatments used for psoriasis can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight, so it is important to check the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) for any treatment(s) you may be using before spending time in the sun.
