Arthritis UK Launch New Report
A new report from Arthritis UK has outlined what makes a 'good' diagnosis of arthritis.
'The Silent Treatment : Why an Arthritis Diagnosis Matters' is part of a 'first' Arthritis Awareness Month in the UK. Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) affects around 1 in 5 people with psoriasis, so we are proud to support the findings of this report.
You can read a summary below:
Delaying an arthritis diagnosis can 'leave people in the dark'
A delayed diagnosis means longer without treatment, which can affect daily life. People may also struggle to stay or get back into work.
Delays can happen 'at any stage of a diagnosis journey'
This could be:
- A delay in visiting your GP, due to not understanding your own symptoms
- A delay in medical tests, referrals or appointments
- Long wait times for MSK specialists.
A diagnosis 'is not just a label'
A diagnosis of arthritis, or psoriatic arthritis, can be a lot to take in. A label can often be a relief but may sometimes lead to more confusion.
A diagnosis conversation should cover what the future might look like with arthritis. People should raise any questions and concerns, such as financial worries and workplace adjustments.
A diagnosis should include links to support services
Charities such as ours can offer useful health information and peer support. This can help you understand your diagnosis and plan your next steps.
