Emma's Story

Emma has lived with psoriasis since she was 14. In her story, she talks about the impact it had on her as a teenager and how she has slowly learnt to love herself.

I have had psoriasis since I was around 14. At first it appeared mainly on my scalp, neck and torso. I was initially put on all the lotions, light therapy, steroids and diets that unfortunately didn’t work for me. After many dermatology appointments I was put onto methotrexate, that comes with its own set of challenges. Luckily it cleared it up and it was back at a manageable state.

Flare ups come and go, however at the moment it’s at its worst. I’m still trying to find something that works for me and hopefully going back on medication soon!

I think people can often overlook the other facts that play into psoriasis. Such as the physical pain it can cause and the mental toll it can have on someone.

When I was younger, mentally, it didn’t affect me as much. I didn’t feel there was a physical expectation I had to live up too. As I hit my late teens where image became much more talked about, I felt I was constantly apologising for the way I looked and I began covering up. I had to adjust and come to terms with the fact I didn’t look like all the other girls on social media. Then I started to see more people/celebrities talk and post about it. It felt comforting to know I wasn’t going through it alone! You realise it’s a beautiful thing and makes you special!

I’m proud to say I feel comfortable in my skin and have learned to love myself for who I am. I will be forever grateful to the support system I have around me
