Emma' Story

Emma spent years living with painful skin before finally receiving a diagnosis of scalp, plaque and guttate psoriasis. By sharing her story, she hopes to encourage others to keep seeking answers and remind them they are not alone.

I have been suffering with my skin for many years now, with my skin getting progressively worse despite treatment from my family GP.

My skin ended up becoming so incredibly painful, especially on my neck, I could hardly move! I ended up returning to my GP for the umpteenth time asking for help as my skin just was not healing despite the topical treatments they'd given me for it, only to discover that my skin was yet again infected for the 5th or 6th time in as many years. Luckily the GP who saw me was a locum and had the foresight to refer me to the dermatologist for further advice and treatment as my skin had been so bad for so long, as my normal GP had refused to refer me to a dermatologist at all claiming all that I had was a bad case of eczema.

It turns out that I had scalp, plaque and teardrop psoriasis when the dermatologist looked at me and my skin!! You could see the poor dermatologist and her boss, who also came to confirm the diagnosis were almost in tears as my skin was so bad and I'd been left to suffer that way for so long before I actually got listened to and taken seriously. I think they both were more devastated at the fact that I had psoriasis than I was!
